P plate driving is by far the riskiest period in a driver's life. A learner driver’s risk of crashing increases 20 to 30 times as soon as they pass their driving test and remains extremely high for the first six months.
In the time it takes to sit and pass a provisional licence test – less than an hour - learner drivers move from being statistically the safest drivers on the road to the most at risk.
The aim of the keys2drive learning approach is to help P platers achieve the six month - zero harm target; in other words, drive for six months without hurting themselves or others. It's a goal designed to build the skills necessary to drive safely for life.
Keys 2 Drive is a FREE lesson funded by the Australian Government.
Keys 2 Drive is providing learner drivers and their parents/supervisors with a Free driving lesson, accompanied by an accredited keys2drive professional Driving Instructor.
The free lesson goes for 60 minutes, during which the keys2drive accredited driving instructor will explain the keys2drive learning approach – 'Find Your Own Way' – and offer examples of how it can be used when learning to drive. The remaining lesson time includes a practical demonstration of these skills being used and taught and you will be driving. For more information visit the keys2drive website.
The keys2drive free lesson is not intended to replace normal driving lessons rather, it should complement them by empowering learner drivers to 'Find Their Own Way' to becoming safer drivers.
Learner drivers will receive training in the best ways to practice, helping them gain the confidence they need to prepare for safe P plate driving and beyond.
Parents/supervisors will come away with tools to help their learner drivers achieve a good foundation for lifelong safe driving.
Who is the free lesson for?
The free lesson is for anyone on their L's, together with their parent/supervisor (the supervisor is the fully licensed driver who usually accompanies the learner when they drive). Only learner drivers who have never driven solo before are currently eligible to apply.
To be eligible for a keys2drive free lesson the learner driver MUST hold an Australian learners permit. Holders of international driving permits upgrading to an Australian licence are NOT eligible for a keys2drive free lesson.
